Installing and visiting one of last year's sites

Installing and Visiting

Keeping it short tonight friends; its been a long day and tomorrow is Safari day so stay tuned for wild animal pictures.

Here is a poem I wrote today:

I see people smiling
I hear “Jambo”
Mzuri sana, mzuri sana
Posho mill
Barber shop
Mzuri sana, mzuri sana,
Mamas singing,
Mamas clapping
Mzuri sana, Mzuri sana
Solar suitcase
Providing light
Asante Kenya
Asante Kenya

You can google the Swahili words!

Goodnight.

Yellow Bark Acacia, one for the most common trees here, and covered with thorns

We've seen lots of cattle herding on the trip.
Typical local housing: mud walls and grass roofs.

Kyle, our budding wildlife photographer (ask to see his pictures of the mongoose) with cattle.

The kitchen of a local center where we installed a solar suitcase today.

This is the "hotel" of the center, which is what they call a small cafe. Typically these cafes serve chappati and tea.

The local mamas with a solar suitcase and panel.
A local elder named Segali.

Amy sorts out the cables.

Safety first! Kyle and John hold the ladder while Neil mounts a lightbulb.

Amy and 2 of the mamas.

Mama Leah and her baby

Here I am across the road from the installation site, at the entrance to the local high school.

Yum! Kale!
We visited a site where a suitcase was installed last year. The local Village Savings and Loan Association (VLSA) has sourced a second battery and use it to power a TV, VCR and sound system.

This man is the tailor of the community. The sewing machine is foot-driven.

A solar suitcase delivered last year lights a duka (local store).

Emily receives a water or milk container made from a gourd as a sign of appreciation.

  1. Amazing photos--do you work for National Geographic...? How close were you to the animals--like really close, or did you have a supremely long telephoto lens? So cool that previous installations are still going; are you planning to return next year/in the future to check out what you're now installing? Continue having an extraordinary and fruitful time for you and your hosts/beneficiaries!!
